Despite Cecil Blazon selecting some of his strongest riders for the 89km time-trial through the ancient Portuguese city of Fundão, it would be 24 year old Scot Gresham Tammany that would finish highest on the classifications for the Colonels Bucket team. Claiming a unexpected and very respectable 4th place Tammany picked up some valuable tour points alongside his CB team mates Udo Greve and Johnnie Dahlerup who took 5th and 7th place respectively.
Team manger Blazon later appeared at a press conference with Tammany commending the Scotsman, saying "he even surprised me today! we still have a lot to work on with Gresham, but today is a great step forward for him...I hope we'll be talking about him in the top places soon". Tammany said he was "delighted with the performance, especially given the strength we have in these hilly TT events". After the press conference news emerged that the recently on-form Etienne Olemans had picked up a chest infection, which may have explained his poor showing (117th) on the day; he is expected to be out of action for the next few weeks.
So bar some poor showings from more accomplished riders and the loss of Etienne Olemans, there was much for the CB's team to celebrate in Portugal; with yet another sterling performance from one of the teams younger riders and someone who is now surely being talked of in terms of greater things. With less than 2 weeks of season 9 remaining, Tammany will know doubt be hoping for yet more chances to shine and secure his position for season 10. However, this will be no easy thing amidst a team who appear to have talent emerging left, right and centre!
